The stent removal process was quick and relatively painless. Basically a case of gritting my teeth and stoically looking the other way while they got on with it. The urologist let me see the stent once he’d got it out; I was surprised at the size of it – somewhere between 9 and 12 inches long, with the coils at each end being about an inch in diameter. I’m glad it’s gone.
I now have to drink at least a couple of litres a day for the next few days to help flush out any debris. Which would be fine, but peeing will be rather uncomfortable (and faintly pink!) for a while too.
Still, as long as it’s done it’s job, and preserved my kidney function, then it will have all been worthwhile.
Update: I’m now in quite a lot of discomfort; pain seems to be in the area of my left kidney. I’ve realised I’ve not been drinking enough, so I’m not unduly worried, and will settle for some glasses of water, a dose of paracetamol and an early night. If things haven’t improved by tomorrow morning then I’ll call the hospital.
